2020 Île Beaubears Island Speaker Series

The Friends of Île Beaubears Island will once again host Miramichi historians and individuals in a Speaker Series during the month of February. 

These presentations will be held at the Nelson Rural School Library (2nd Floor), 26 Saint Patrick’s Drive, in Nelson Miramichi, at 7pm on Monday and Thursday evenings throughout the month.

As well, these events are hosted by Nelson Rural School and sponsored by The Friends of Île Beaubears Island.

On Mondays: It will be held on: February 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th

On Thursdays: It will be held on: February 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th

Plus, new this year on Tuesday, February 4th, 2020, at 7 pm, there will be a special presentation at the Miramichi Valley High School, 345 McKenna Avenue, in Newcastle by Brandon Savage, Brett Cameron and Chris Matheson of “June 2019 In Review and 75^th Anniversary of VE Day 2020 Tour Preview”

February 10th – Speaker Series – James Rodney Fraser: Zion’s Hope

In both New Brunswick and Utah, Joseph Russell was respected and successful. On the Miramichi he had been a successful shipbuilder and his community efforts were publicly praised. He had built 29 reputable ships, and had amassed $70,000 by the time he retired in 1850.

February 13th – Speaker Series: Kevin Gallant: The Lost Tavern On The Nashwaak

On the river Nashwaak, there was a French tavern in 1795 which is lost in history and the stories with it. These tavern stories and structures will return to life in this presentation. These are not fables but real experiences that built the foundations for new beginnings in New Brunswick.

February 20th – Speaker Series: Ashley Hallihan – Miramichi Youth Fly Fishing Clubs – Getting Them Back On The Water

February 27th – Speaker Series: Susan Butler: Dr. Louise Manny And The Miramichi Folksong Festival

In 1947 Lord Beaverbrook supplied Manny with a tape recorder and convinced her to go out and collect traditional Miramichi folksongs. This led to her hosting a weekly program of Miramichi folksongs and folklore on radio station C.K.M.R. in Newcastle for more than twenty years, and to the founding, in 1957-58, of the annual Miramichi Folksong Festival.
