While education is a necessary component to achieve sustainable behaviour change, it is not sufficient on its own. Education, coupled with health coaching, has been found to be significantly more effective in achieving lasting behaviour change.

Need help making healthy lifestyle changes? A health coach can help you set and reach your wellness goals, increase your self-confidence, improve your health, manage stress, be more active and stay on track.

A Health Coach’s role is to guide clients through their health and wellness goals with one-on-one health coaching by using a personalized approach to help guide and motivate clients towards wellness goals or with group coaching workshops held in workplaces or other community settings. These workshops provide participants with a customized action plan and insight on how to overcome obstacles and maintain their goal in the long term.

Who can benefit from Health Coaching? Anyone looking for support to make healthy lifestyle changes, maintain health and wellness, and prevent or manage diabetes or other chronic disease.

This project launched in November 2012 and our services are completely free thanks to our partnership with the Medavie Health Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association and the New Brunswick Department of Health. We work with individuals who are 19 years old and over to help them gain the knowledge, self-managing skills, tools, and confidence to become active participants in their care so they can reach their wellness goals. We also provide support to individual wellness and help connect clients with credible sources available in their community. We are currently serving six targeted regions in New Brunswick: the Northwest region, Fredericton, Saint John, Bathurst, Moncton and Miramichi.

Summer-fresh-fruits-isolatedDuring the past three years of this pilot program, we have worked with over 700 clients one-on-one and have had 2908 New Brunswickers participate in our group coaching workshops. Our evaluations have demonstrated that clients vegetable and fruit consumption has doubled, clients went from light to moderate physical activity, clients’ self-efficacy has improved significantly, and 83% of Health Coach clients met or partially met their wellness goals.
