Discover Your Roots in Miramichi
Many people visit the Miramichi region to
research their family history and genealogical
roots.
The two local libraries, in Chatham and
Newcastle, along with the Miramichi Branch of the
New Brunswick Genealogical Society (NBGS-
Miramichi) offer a variety of services to help you
in your search.
Cemetery Research
If you're planning to visit graveyards, check
out the cemetery books first (available at both
libraries). They will help you to locate buried
relatives and pinpoint where they are so you don't
have to spend the whole day in the cemetery. You
can also find that same information on the
Genealogical Society’s website,
www.nbgsmiramichi.ca. Libraries Providing Research Assistance
The website contains obituaries, marriages, births, old North Shore Chatham Public Library, 24 King St., Miramichi,

Membership in NBGS-Miramichi is $40 for the year and gives you full
access to the website, a copy of the group’s newsletter (published three times a year) and a copy of the provincial genealogy
magazine Generations (published four times a year). You can also access their private library held at the Chatham Public
Library which contains all of their published books of census, cemetery transcriptions, obituary collections, some church
records, vital stats from local newspaper and 250+ family histories, as well as local books of genealogy and local history.
NBGS-Miramichi is under the umbrella of the New Brunswick Genealogical Society. We are all volunteers who have
an interest in working on our family trees and in helping others to do the same. We do not conduct research for people,
but we do assist those who wish to do the research themselves. We have published 80 books over the last 33 years and they
are available for sale and at local libraries.
The group meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month
at the Chatham Library at 6:15pm, except in June, July,
August and December. When possible, meetings are hybrid
(in-person at the Chatham Library and virtually on Zoom).
New members are always welcome.
To learn more, become a member, or join the
discussion on our forum, visit our website at

NBGS-Miramichi often displays research material at the Irish Festival in
Miramichi (July 19-21), as shown above.
