Roll a Rock Over
By Gail Collette
Wishing you the curiosity to roll a rock over
And visit tiny neighbors not yet met.
Mind, close the stone behind you.
May a chick-a-dee-dee-dee
Or dove, delight you with its song.
Bless the birds and give nature a care.
Welcome the smell of the wild rose bush
Before its buds are exhausted by exhaust.
Toss an apple seed, not core, into the soil.
Here’s hoping paper cups get picked up,
Before they roll up in the river.
Keep it clean for fish that might be our dinner.
Along your way, feel the green grass
Between your toes; not a ketchup packet.
Nature tickles our souls more than plastic.
A test of the heart is if it opened
As early as the Chi River this year,
And missed playing on the depths of ice.
