The 1st Green Leaf Awards at the Green Fair

Greater Miramichi Regional Service Commission held the 1st Green Fair sharing what happens to your garbage and recyclables after it leaves the curb.   They took the opportunity to offer the Leaf Awards presented at the Miramichi Exhibition on Wednesday Oct 17th.

This new annual environmental recognition program intends to reward charitable organizations, individuals, and institutions/schools who have made outstanding contributions and whose initiatives have had positive impact on the environment in the Greater Miramichi Region.

The winners: Individual – Marion MacDougall; School – Gretna Green; Organization – Woodmens Museum.

Individual Catagory 

-After retiring from Nursing, she became a master Gardener
-Sells plants to raise $ for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation
-Planted a flower garden at Saint Michaels by the Sea Catholic Church in Black River
-Maintains the garden around the war memorial at the Black River Community Cemetary
-Is a member of the Miramichi Garden Club and donates plants for their annual fundraiser

School Catagory

-The staff at Gretna Green serve as sustainability champions to instill life-long environmental awareness in their students
– Students develop environmental habits that are brought home and shared with the entire family
– These efforts include: Batteries are recycled, Paper left over from school printer reused in student activities, a community garden cared for by parents, daily litter pick promoting the schools “Keep our Earth Clean” campaign all year

Organization Catagory

– Over the last 3 years the board, the enviromental committee and Museum employees have worked hard to minimize the environmental impact of the facility.
– New marketing strategy focuses on promoting Miramichi Region as “Atlantic Canada’s Great Outdoors”
-Upgraded heating system; Installation of additional insulation; Replacement of thermostats; Upgraded lighting; Upgraded washrooms (eco-friendly toilets); Waste Reduction Initiatives

The Green Fair was open all day and had a large turnout from the schools and local residents.  View images of the day long event.

    It was a fantastic event. We learned how they recycle used paint and where to buy it, about the new fishing line recycling tubes put up at strawberry marsh and a ton of other things
