The Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Education
When our students decide to jump in and start their GED, some are very glad to learn that GED is available online. That being said, online education is not for everyone! It has advantages, of course, but also several disadvantages. So you have to think twice before starting your online GED, and you should take the time to weigh the pros and cons. Know that even though I am focusing on the GED program, no matter what type of training you want to start online, this article is for you!
First, the disadvantages… The biggest disadvantage of GED online is surely the fact that you do not have a teacher at your side to accompany you! Indeed, this is not to put down GED online, but you must be self-motivated to start such learning! Online GED is a lot harder since no one is holding you by the hand, let’s say it like that. If you have the drive to learn by yourself, fine, but otherwise, I strongly advise you to think twice! Of course, there are resources… you can, for instance, combine online courses with evening classes which gives you access to a teacher to help you if you do not understand. However, it is true that traditional GED in the class, whether full-time or part-time, is much easier because your teacher is in the same classroom as you, and can sit next to you to explain if you do not understand.
Then, another major disadvantage is the organization of time. Depending on your motivation, your personality, and your tenacity, it can be difficult to get started and manage your time appropriately. You have to be very organized and motivated to do your GED online. An online course is not like sitting in a classroom with other students and everyone is focused and working. You are at home and surrounded by distractions… it is very easy to procrastinate! Again, if you are a rather distracted and disorganized person, I strongly advise against online study.
Now, let’s see the benefits… The biggest benefit is certainly the fact that you can continue your daily activities, including your work and taking care of your family. This type of training allows a better balance of work, family, and study. On the other hand, do not forget that it can be difficult to manage, you must be self-driven, organized and motivated.
Also, online education allows you to progress at your own pace. If you are in no hurry to graduate, this is the perfect solution. Indeed, online GED, especially if you work and have a family, may take longer to complete, since you spend less of your time with it than some who do it at full time.
To conclude, think about it before starting online training. Ask yourself the right questions… Is it a good fit for you or not? Weigh the pros and cons well. If you choose to go with online study and then change your mind, you can still sign up for full-time or part-time classroom study.
