DFO Announces 2017 Striped Bass Regulations
On Friday March 31st, 2017, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) announced new regulations for the 2017 Striped Bass Recreational Fishery in the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Noteworthy are three significant changes that have been implemented for 2017; the season will now run from April 15 to October 31 (inland waters if the Miramichi River system – April 15- October 15); the daily possession has been increased to two (2) Striped bass from June 15- August 21; and the planned 3-week closure of the NW Miramichi River spawning grounds during the spawning season. These changes do not in any way reflect recommendations made by the Miramichi Salmon Association (MSA) and other key organizations during formal consultations with DFO, which focused on reducing the population by way of boosting retention levels through increased (daily) possession limits of fish measuring greater than 50 cm.

Since 1953, the Miramichi Salmon Association (MSA) and its members have directed their capabilities and their funds to the protection of the entire Miramichi River system. The MSA watches over the Miramichi as a champion of conservation on behalf of anglers, outfitters, guides and all others with economic, environmental and recreational interests in the river.
