National Emergency Preparedness Week May 1-7
The following message was issued by Justice and Public Safety Minister Stephen Horsman in recognition of National Emergency Preparedness Week, May 1-7:
Taking action to protect you and your family in the event of an emergency begins before an emergency happens.
National Emergency Preparedness Week is coordinated by Public Safety Canada in close collaboration with provinces, territories and other partners. The theme for this year’s campaign is Plan. Prepare. Be Aware.
The theme highlights the importance of having measures in place in the event of an emergency. It also emphasizes the need to keep up to date on current conditions, like the weather, that might impact you.
An emergency situation can arise anywhere at any time and often with little or no warning. Everyone has a role to play in being prepared to ensure New Brunswick families and communities remain safe.
Every household should be aware of the risks in their area, have an emergency plan, and an emergency kit at their disposal.
A basic emergency kit should include essential items such as water, food, battery-powered radios and flashlights, and a first aid kit – everything needed to sustain your family for 72 hours. You should also consider having a stock of items specific to your family’s needs, such as prescriptions, diapers or infant formula.
I encourage New Brunswickers to follow these steps to help take care of themselves and their loved ones during an emergency.
Together, we can build a safer, stronger, more resilient province.
