Fundraiser for Blackville Athletes to Represent Canada at Dance World Cup
A fundraising event will be held at the Miramichi Folklore Park in Renous on Sunday May 5th from 2 – 6 pm to support Abby Keenan and Anna Sturgeon, who will represent Canada this summer in Braga, Portugal at the Dance World Cup.
The competitive dancers who both attend Blackville High School were selected through an audition process for the Canadian East Coast Contemporary Team in August 2018.
Both girls had travelled to Toronto twice since then to practice with their team.
During the first practice, Anna was also selected to represent Canada as the East Coast Soloist.
This fundraising event will assist the dancers with the cost of their trip. The event will feature several local singers and musicians.
Abby and Anna will also showcase their talent by performing a few dance routines. There will be a bake sale, 50/50 and tickets for a Mother’s Day basket draw.
Supporters are invited to write messages of support and well wishes for the girls in a book that will also be on hand at the event.
“Being chosen to represent Canada at this international competition in Portugal is a tremendous accomplishment and a wonderful opportunity for my nieces,” says the girls’ aunt, Kellie Underhill. “Over 50 countries and 6000 dancers are expected to attend. It’s like the Olympics for dancers!”
The girls will represent Canada East as part of a larger united National Dance Team that includes teams from Central Canada and Canada West.
While they are in Europe they will not only compete but they will have many opportunities to train with world leading master teachers, explore local culture, experience native cuisine, and engage with dancers from all over the world.
“I hope to see a lot of people from the community out at the Folklore Park on Sunday, May 5th to show their support and help send my nieces off on this experience of a lifetime!”
